Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov has given honorary citizenship to Egyptian footballer Mohammed Salah at a ceremony at the presidential palace in the capital Grozny, the residence and training of the national team during his participation in the World Cup.

Kadyrov, backed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, gave a copy of his presidential decision and a medal at a dinner party on Friday.

The Chechen president has rejected charges of using the Egyptian player to improve his image in the West and Arab countries following reports from international human rights organizations that the Chechen authorities are suppressing dissenting voices, discriminating against women and persecuting homosexuals. Chechen officials deny the allegations.

“We did not invite Mohamed Salah or the Egyptian team (to establish a training camp in Chechnya), but they chose us of their own volition,” Kadyrov said.
